Tumblr's user base has been rising in huge numbers over the past few years. It's a social network where most users are 30 and under. One of the worst mistakes that you can make when using Tumblr is to treat it like a marketing dumping ground. You won't create a following doing that. Tumblr is geared to the creative side of business. Tumblr users tend to be suspicious of any kind of marketing so thinking outside the box is necessary. Figure out what your target audience responds to, and then give it to them.
What marketing techniques have worked for you on Tumblr?

Tumblr is all about the images, so make sure you post great ones. Almost 80% of Tumblr posts are photos or other images. Images get shared the most, people love images, just look at Pinterest or Instagram for more proof.

The more specialized and very specific a niche the better. Get on Tumblr and start looking around at some of the blogs on there. If you're looking for three legged cats with one eye and no tail, that are black and gray, I'm sure there's a blog for it. I don't know for sure, but that was just an example. People like weird stuff, no joke.

Always leave a link to your website on ever post you make. It's hard to capture leads or convert a sale from Tumblr, but make sure that people know how to get in contact with you if they are interested in your product or services.

Just like every other social community, it's all about engagement. So make sure to follow other Tumblr blogs. Post blogs you follow on your page to show your support. It is very important on Tumblr to show the love and support. It can be a close knit community which can be good for your brand.

If you have an Instagram account connect it to your Tumblr page. This will probably double your exposure with very little effort. Encourage your audience to repost your content on other platforms to increase your reach.

Like other social networks, make sure you are using hashtags that are relevant to your content. Tumblr users like to use the search feature to find new content on Tumblr, the same is true of other sites like Twitter and Pinterest.

This is a social network so be social. Always respond to comments and comment on other posts. Engage with your followers to earn their trust. Tumblr is big on this, so the more you engage, the more your content will get reposted, and this will also increase your follower count.

When posting videos try to keep them around the one minute mark. Videos that are short have more engagement, then videos that are longer. So if you are trying to show people a complete presentation cut out the fluff and stick to a few main points, then direct them to your CTA. If you have to, make a series of short videos instead of one long one.

When sharing content try to share something that gives the viewer a huge emotional response. It can be cute or funny or even controversial. You see it all the time on Facebook or Twitter. Something that makes you say "awww" or "I can't believe that just happened". This is the kind of stuff that goes viral.

Links from Tumblr are dofollow links, and you have full control of this on your tumblrog. If you have a popular post and it keeps getting reblogged, you get all those dofollow backlinks. So if it's shared 150 times, you get 150 dofollow backlinks.
