Know your target audience. Your audience will always let you know what they like and don't like. So it is critical that you listen to and understand them. Read and respond to blog comments. Take time to read emails from them. The key is selecting and writing about topics in a way that your readers are familiar with. You need to define your audience. If you’re just starting out, you get to decide who it is you want to reach. If your established, one of the best ways to know your audience is simply to talk to them.
Be relevant. Focus on your audience. What are they interested in? Focus on your niche. Stick to what your niche is about. Relevant topics focus on your audience and fall within the parameters of your niche. Relevant content starts with needs, and develops solutions. If you can successfully solve issues, then you’re being relevant.
Find a blog to learn from. If you want to pick great topics, then go to blogs that are already doing it and study them. Identify a blog that is doing it right, and follow their example. You can get great ideas from these blogs, but don't steal their content. Make these ideas your own.
Use content tools. Find and use websites, with trending topics. See what is getting shared. Find topics that are most relevant to your blog and your niche.

This is very good advice to follow. When a blogger first starts out they usually make the mistake of not staying focused on their audience. It is so easy to stray from what you initially set out to do. That is why it is always good to write down your plan for your blog and decide who your target audience is. When you write a post imagine that someone from your audience is sitting in front of you and ask them if this post is relevant to them. This is a good exercise for staying on track.
