LinkedIn is the social network for professionals. It can be used to find a job, find new employees, get sales leads, tell people about your business, and more. But it can also be used as a marketing tool just like any other social network.
What marketing techniques have worked for you on LinkedIn?

Just like any other network you need to optimize your personal profile. When people visit your profile they look at you first not your business, so it should be professional and personal. Use related keywords, but don't go overboard to where you look fake. You want it to be attention grabbing and to stand out from the crowd. Your content should be engaging and show that you are an authority in your field. Fill out all available fields and keep adding things when new content is available.

Start to reach out to your connections. Decide who you want to get to know better and share information and ask questions, learn more about them. When you start developing relationships you start to become a trusted advisor to each other. You will be the first person they turn to for advice on buying a product, answering questions, etc. You might even collaborate on projects.

Start to focus on smaller local discussion groups instead of the large ones. People in smaller groups are more likely to read your posts and respond to them. You will also stand out more and appear at the top of the list in discussions for longer periods of time. So when people join they will see a lot of your information first.

When involved in group discussions make sure you offer valuable quality content. You want to establish yourself as a leader in your field so when a person decides to buy a product, they will think of you first. When you spam or get too promotional, people tend to ignore this completely. You have a great chance to get good quality leads and positive feedback if you do this right.

Just like other networks being visual will make you stand out and people enjoy the content. Using photos, videos, screenshots, infographics, and slide shows will greatly help you to get noticed. When you post this kind of content make sure to stay on top of it and update when necessary.

You can grow your email list by writing a special email for LinkedIn people that have connected with you. You can message fifty people at a time and invite them to join your email list. Thank them for being a connection and include a direct sign up link. A good thing to do is offer them a free gift for signing up.

Don't just participate in a group, start your own. Once you start it, join as many related groups as you can and start to find members in those groups that would like to join your group. Once these people join your group you are in charge and you can keep competitors out. Now provide them with quality content to keep them interested. You now also have a built in mailing list.

Image is everything and it will be the first thing people will see when visiting your profile. Make sure that you have a high quality image of at least 646 x 220 pixels or larger for your business profile and 1400 x 425 for your personal profile. You can use this space for promoting your campaigns, announcements, special, etc.

If you just have your personal profile consider creating a company page. This gives people another avenue to learn about your business. If you post good quality content you can build a solid following which will build your company's online authority.

Most social networks use hashtags for many different reasons, but LinkedIn doesn't. Using hashtags and tagging people with the @ symbol doesn't create links on LinkedIn. So do yourself a favor and get in the habit of not using them on LinkedIn.
